‘Typography workshop with Kim’

On Tuesday there was a typography class with Kim, and those of us who signed up enjoyed a day of learning about and working with type.

To our surprise, instead of sitting back and listening to a lecture about the history, successful creation of combinations, and other theory topics, we spent most of the day drawing different typefaces and creating specimens (a publication of different applications of a typeface, such as different sizes, colours, and styles).

After drawing the type number eight most of us had enough of typography for the next few weeks, but we persevered and turned up for the afternoon class, where we had a chance to create the specimens in Adobe InDesign.

The whole day was quite demanding, but Kim knew what she was doing and I found that drawing typefaces has actually helped me to understand it better through paying attention to the details.

Unfortunately I haven’t finished my specimen yet, but hopefully I’ll get around to it as a part of type research for my FMP.
